The flash is a 173 acre lake created at the turn of the 20th century by coal mining subsidence, mainly from Bickershaw Colliery, and flooding. The place is now a huge 494 acre nature reserve which is visited by tens of thousands of people every year and is a keen place for twitchers to go and vist due to the wealth of bird species that can be found there and the large number of purpose built hides. I just went for a walk :).
