Lake District Day Three

Day three was much of the same as the rest. A bit of walking and just generally chilling out. On day three we went to Lodore Falls near Keswick. With all the rainfall we have had in the UK this year, the waterfalls were in full flow and the roaring of the the rushing water could be heard far before the water could be seen.

The waterfall is right in some woodland. I love the woods in the Lakes, especially after there has been a lot of rain. There is juts so much green to be seen (no poetry intended). Laura wearing her bright red poncho provided the ideal contrast in the forest. There was also an array for plants around due to the weather. I thought I'd try out some macro imaging on them.

  

After our walk to the falls, we decided to sit by the late for a while. There were lots of people on the water kayaking and sailing. There was also a dead sheep! Nothing ruins a view like a dead, rotting animal. Made a good photo though. If you are squeamish, I'd skip the second Photograph along.

 

Next it was off to Bowder Stone. According to Wikipeadia (2012):

"The Bowder Stone is a large glacial erratic ( a piece of rock that differs from the size and type of rock native to the area in which it rests) in Borrowdale. Cumbria, England at grid reference NY25401639. It is estimated to weigh around 2000 tons and is about 30'(9m) high, 50'(15m) across and 90'(27m) in circumference. There is a staircase allowing visitors to climb to the top, and has been since at least 1890.[1] Its name most likely comes from the Norse god Odin's son, Baldr."

 

The sheer size of this random rock, half way up a mountain 169 meters above sea level baffles the mind. Was it brought to the lakes by shifting glaciers in the last ice age? Was it carried by humans as some sort of pre-historic gift? No one knows. The only thing we know is that it is an impressive sight and well worth a visit to sit on the top and ponder.

 

Like a lot of things of interest in the Lake District, Bowders Rock is in the middle of wood land. We had a nice walk down the valley through the trees and trickling streams that feed the river at the bottom. Here we skimmed stones and added to a stone ring that looks to gradually be being build by visitors on the bank.

As you can see, it was a busy old day. We went back to the tent, had a pan full of lobbys and went off to bed.
